In this video, we want to tell you something about the Fimbriated hymen. But before that, let’s talk about what is hymen.

Hymen derives from the Ancient Greek word meaning thin skin or membrane, The Hymen is a fold of mucous membrane about 1mm thick, derived from the posterior vaginal wall, situated at the vaginal outlet. Most of the women have hymen when they born. But honestly, we don’t know what physiological function does hymen really has until now.

So, What is the fimbriated hymen?

The fimbriated hymen is the common types of hymen that woman have. This type of hymen is also called Frillyedged Hymen. The last part of the fallopian tube in women is known as “fimbria”. The fimbriated hymen opening appearance is similar to the fimbria of the fallopian tube. It’s like have multiple projections that look a bit like ruffles or flower petals.

fimbriated hymen shape is not some kind of pathological condition. So no need to be worry when your gynecologist tells you if you have it.

 

Are there other types of hymen? (corrected)

There are several types of hymen shapes. crescentic hymen, annular hymen and fimbriated hymen. This three are common types of hymen. There are also less common hymen types includes dentate hymen, denticular type hymen, lunar-shape hymen, septate hymen, bifenestrate hymen, cribriform hymen, microimperforate hymen, imperforate hymen, labial hymen and parous introitus types hymen. Some women are even born without hymen!

Imperforate hymen is the most common type of blockage of the vagina.

Some surgery about hymen

In this part, we want to introduce you some hymen surgery terminology.

Hymenorrhaphy. This is a general term for hymen surgeries.  Hymenorrhaphy or hymen reconstruction surgery is the temporary surgical restoration of the hymen. The term comes from the Greek words hymen meaning “membrane”, and raphḗ meaning “suture”. It is also known as hymenoplasty, although strictly this term would also include hymenotomy.

Hymenoplasty. This is a repairing operation of hymenal remnant tissue for mimicking first sexual intercourse again.  It can be done for small and long terms before the marriage. It’s also considered in aesthetic genital surgery.

Hymenectomy and hymenotomy. A hymenectomy sometimes also called hymenotomy. It is a surgical procedure where an opening is created in the hymen. It is often used when a person has a hymen that is abnormally thick, septate, or otherwise obstructing the flow of menstruation, one of the example is hymenectomy for imperforate hymen.
