In this image, you will find mesenteric artery, mesenteric vein, mesentery, mesothelium, areolar tissue, mesothelium, mucosa, submucosa, muscularis externa, serosa.

  1. mesentery: a double sheet of peritoneal membrane; provides an access route for the passage of blood vessels, nerves, and lymphatic vessels to and from the digestive tract; stabilize the positions of the attached organs and prevent the intestines from becoming entangled during digestive movements or sudden changes in body position.
  2. mucosa: the inner lining of the tract; is a mucous membrane consisting of an epithelium moistened by glandular secretion and a lamina propria of areolar tissue.
  3. submucosa: a layer of dense irregular connective tissue that surrounds the mucosa; has large blood vessels and lymphatic vessels; in some regions also contains exocrine glands that secrete buffers and enzymes into the lumen of the digestive tract.
  4. muscularis externa: is dominated by smooth muscle cells in two layers- an inner circular layer and an outer longitudinal layer – that play an essential role in mechanical processing and in the movement of materials along the digestive tract.
  5. serosa: a layer of visceral peritoneum that covers the muscularis externa along most portions of the digestive tract; is absent in the oral cavity, pharynx, esophagus, and rectum, where a dense network of collagen fibers forms a sheath – the adventitia – that firmly attaches the digestive tract to adjacent structures.
